what is viral marketing?

If you’ve heard the expression “viral marketing,” but don’t really fully understand what it is, this video will help.
No, really it will. Prediction: You will soon see on or in the national news a story about “Rick Rolling.”
Think about the countless videos and links you get forwarded on a daily basis. Before you know it, everyone you talk to has seen the same video or visited the same link. Pretty soon, you’re watching The Today Show, and the brains behind something called “Jib-Jab” cartoons are being interviewed. It’s all the rage, and everyone is talking about the same thing, elevating that link or video to top-of-mind status. Now, something associated with that link is a household term, a la the creators of the Jib-Jab cartoons. (Think “Obama Girl” for a more recent example.)
This same principle has been employed as the to-date chief marketing tactic supporting the forthcoming release of the next Batman installment. But, for that, I defer to Brandon…
