Standing by your man

From Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to now New York’s Governor Spitzer (and plenty in between: Larry Craig, Bill Clinton, New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevy, et. al.), it appears to be a new-century matter of course to conduct a press conference with the disgraced politician being flanked by the loyal wife. I understand from a PR standpoint why this seems like a good idea, but hasn’t this become a transparent ploy? I mean, if the husband is actually confessing to a salacious crime (Spitzer, Kilpatrick) or making an announcement about a lifestyle that will preclude marital reconciliation (McGreevy), doesn’t the missus simply become a PR pawn?
