Time Magazine has an excellent breakdown of their 2007 picks for the best sites on the Web.

Take a look at number 34 on the list: Newsvine.com.
“See what everybody is talking about right now, and add your two cents. That’s the basic idea behind Newsvine.com, a Web 2.0 cocktail that mixes elements of Digg (social news), Netvibes (customization) and NowPublic (user-generated news). ”
The site combines many of the practices used by the most successful social media sites to create the perfect marriage of customized content and social interaction. It’s a great example of the direction the Internet is heading.
