Easing into 9-5

By: Mark Winter

Continuing right along with the theme of transitional apprehension, moving “From the Classroom to the Office” is definitely something that has been on my mind as well…

When everyone told me college would be the best four years of my life…they were right. Unfortunately, in my circumstance, it was cut to only three and a half years (being an overachiever has its drawbacks) and the beginning of my 9-5 life came about much quicker than I could have ever imagined.

So how does a former college student, with a college life mentality, enter into the working world? Joining the Identity team has definitely made the impossible possible. Although 9 a.m. is still early for me, each day at Identity is both demanding and rewarding. From my experience thus far, public relations is by nature an exciting field, but it is the culture and employees within this office who have eased my transition to a “career girl”.

After only being here for a couple months, there have already been a number of happy hours, lunch-n-learns, team building activities (Road Rally: Go Purple Team!) and some “impromptu” social gatherings in the graphics department.

My supervisors are supportive and patient and continue to challenge me with new assignments and tasks each day. Although I am technically at the “bottom of the totem pole” as an account assistant, I’m given ample responsibility and feel my work and presence is respected.

So if I must leave behind the days of living with my six best girlfriends, going out five nights a week and sleeping until noon (all on my parents dime), then I’m sure glad it’s for a place like Identity.
