A Shooting Star
By: Andrea Trapani
Anybody remember this guy? They same fame is fleeting and in this case that couldn’t be more true. In fact it really isn’t if it’s the right kind. Those outside of the Detroit area may not know who Dick Purtan is but he is a local legend. As the article says, he has been a local radio personality for 45 years and has earned fame not by being just a hip, holier-than-thou radio star but by being an active, supporting member of the community and using his high profile to do great things. For example, as the article says, his annual radiothon for the Salvation Army’s Bed and Bread Program has raised more than $22 million to feed homeless and hungry people in metro Detroit.
The moral of the story? It’s more impressive to earn 45 years of fame than to soak up 15 minutes.
