INKSTER, Mich., December 6, 2011 – Inkster-based Starfish Family Services (Starfish), a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating brighter futures for the children of at-risk families in metropolitan Detroit, has received a $5,200 grant from the Metro Health Foundation (MHF). Starfish Chief Executive Officer Ann Kalass made the announcement.
The grant was awarded to Starfish in support of the agency’s focused approach on ensuring the healthy development of young children in metro Detroit, beginning with prenatal supports. Specifically, as part of Starfish’s commitment to early childhood development, this grant will contribute to the agency’s ability to provide prenatal and childbirth education for low-income pregnant women, giving them support, guidance and information on prenatal health for mother and baby, and the process of labor and birth. The project will provide childbirth education classes to 48 low-income, high-risk pregnant women in Inkster in 2012.
“The women Starfish serves have limited social support systems and little to no access to childbirth education, increasing the risk of anxiety and stress that can harm their baby’s physical development,” said Kalass. “We are extremely grateful for this grant. Starfish can now better support local families through pregnancy and successful birth outcomes.”
Metro Health Foundation is a private grant-making foundation. MHF makes grants to Michigan organizations for health care and in health-related fields.
