DETROIT, Mich., November 5, 2009 – Southfield, Mich.-based The iGroup, Michigan’s leading and exclusive model and talent agency, has announced exclusive talent Reuben Yabuku as the artistic director for the acclaimed musical Purlie, to benefit the Family Affair Adoption Recruitment Festival. Tony DiMambro, lead talent agent for The iGroup, made the announcement.
Produced by Buku Productions Theatre Company, an independent Detroit production company and a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to providing metro Detroit-area youth with opportunity in educational, cultural and artistic development, Purlie is welcomed to The Millennium Centre Theatre at 15600 J L Hudson Drive in Southfield, Mich. The production is an overture to its first theatrical run at the New McCree Theatre in Flint, Mich., where Yabuku was originally recruited to direct the show. After an enthusiastic response from theater patrons, Yabuku and his own company, Buku Productions, collaborated with New McCree in order to bring the musical to Detroit audiences. The show, based on the 1960 play Purlie Victorious was adapted as a Broadway musical in the 1970s, and will now be performed by Buku professionals in high-quality singing, acting, dancing and instrumental performance.
The shows, which will run on November 13th and 14th, will support Buku Productions community outreach efforts for the Family Affair Adoption Recruitment Festival, an initiative that applies all monetary contributions to uniting prospective adoptive and foster care parents with their new children. At each performance of Purlie, an adoption agent will be present to answer questions about adoption and to educate patrons on the joys of starting a new family. Yabuku, an adoptive parent himself, piloted the festival, with the hopes of inspiring potential parents.
“It is an honor to bring such a lovely production to the Buku’s Detroit stage,” said Yabuku. “With a vibrant musical, stage excellence and a positive charitable initiative, we hope to engage and entertain the audiences of metro Detroit and to inspire performers to get involved.”
