The Roeper School Wins Big at the 2011 Great Lakes Model United Nations Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Mich., December 14, 2011 –The Roeper School (Roeper), a co-educational day school for gifted children, today announced the outstanding work of their students at the 2011 Great Lakes Invitational Model United Nations (Model UN) Conference.  Head of School Phillip Deely made the announcement.

Nineteen students from Roeper participated in the conference, which was held in Kalamazoo, Mich. November 30 – December 3, 2011.  Model UN is a national program that provides student participants with a better understanding of the inner-workings of the UN as they build skills in diplomacy and compromise.  Cooperative, hands-on learning allows students to confront a range of topics with the perspective of their assigned country or organization. The Great Lakes Model UN (GLIMUN) conference provided students a forum for addressing global concerns in a “real world” context. Participants addressed important issues such as regional conflicts, peacekeeping, human rights and economic and social development.

Roeper students were honored with the following awards at the GLIMUN conference:

• Aaron Bernard of Birmingham, Erik Burbulla of Rochester Hills and Nathan Flynn of Troy, representing Brazil, received a “Best Delegation” award in the General Assembly.
• Amit Khandhadia of Troy, representing North Korea (DPRK) in the Legal Committee, and Aaron Bernard, representing Brazil in the Special Political Committee, both were recognized as “Best Delegates.”
• Brazil delegate Erik Burbulla also received an “Honorable Mention” award for his work in the Disarmament Committee.
• Roeper had three delegates chosen as Major Speakers to address the plenary bodies – Spenser Solys of Northville, representing Brazil; Rodger MacArthur of Bloomfield, representing Italy and North Korea delegate Amit Khandhadia.

“We are extremely proud of all the Roeper delegates that participated in the conference,” stated Deely. “It’s rewarding to see the students so passionate about understanding international affairs and working with others to develop plans that address real world issues.”

Roeper will next participate in the National High School Model UN conference in New York City at the UN in March 2012.
