SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Sept. 22, 2011 — Peter Sugar, a member of Southfield-based Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss, P.C., has been recognized with the Donald H. Gordon Award for Excellence in Teaching by Wayne State University Law School.
Sugar was presented the award by Wayne Law Dean Robert M. Ackerman at the State Bar of Michigan’s annual meeting in Dearborn on Sept. 15. Established in 1981 and presented annually to a Wayne Law instructor that exemplifies excellence in the classroom, the award is named for Donald H. Gordon who served as dean of the Law School from 1975-1980 and recently passed away in March of this year.
Sugar is the first adjunct professor to be honored with the award. He currently co-teaches Business Planning with Professor Alan Schenk, a renowned expert in tax law. Business Planning is a year-long, capstone course in business law taught in the context of real-world business settings. Sugar focuses on advanced corporation law, securities law and finance alongside Schenk’s advanced business tax offering.
Since graduating from Wayne Law in 1970, Sugar has taught Research and Writing, Securities Regulation, Agency and Partnership, Corporate Finance and, for the past eight years, Business Planning.
“This recognition is a great honor and, at the same time, extremely humbling,” Sugar said. “I am fortunate to have the opportunity to teach and work with the outstanding faculty at Wayne Law. In particular, I have had the unique opportunity to collaborate during the past eight years with Alan Schenk, a distinguished tax scholar and, coincidentally, my tax professor. More importantly, I am inspired by the creative energy and contribution of our students. This engaged student participation makes our class an exciting, alive business law laboratory that reproduces legal analysis of common and exotic business transactions settings.”
