ANN ARBOR, Mich., February 11, 2009 — Southeast Michigan-based J.S. Vig Construction Company announced today that is has completed construction of the new Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Craig Singer served as the developer and Neumann/Smith as the architect. The announcement was made by J.S. Vig CEO Joseph Vig, LEED AP.
Located in Ann Arbor, Mich., the GLERL focuses on issues such as invasive species, water levels and health of the lakes that provide drinking water as well as recreational and commercial opportunities to residents of eight states and two Canadian provinces.
The 54,423-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility contains modern wet and dry laboratories, conference facilities, a library, marine instrumentation shop and office space to accommodate nearly 120 federal and cooperative institute employees. The site is one of only seven NOAA facilities in the United States.
“The entire project team focused on incorporating sustainable features throughout the facility in order to create a one-of-a-kind ‘green’ environment for the lab’s staff,” said Vig. “To reduce the project’s carbon footprint, the team included elements such as the preservation and restoration of green areas, recycled building materials, a high-tech variable volume lab hood system, daylighting and views from labs and offices, low VOC finish materials, an indoor environmental quality work plan during construction and a complete building air flush before occupancy. The developer also relocated building’s footprint to allow for preservation of a 100-year-old Oak Tree, that now frames its entry.”
