Roeper Hosts Dutch Educators to Assist with Gifted School Program in the Netherlands
By: Mark Winter
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., May 10, 2010 — Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based The Roeper School, a co-educational day school for gifted children, is hosted a group of 12 teachers from the Netherlands from Saturday May 1 through Saturday May 8, 2010. Roeper Head of School Randall Dunn made the announcement.
The teachers, in town to observe and interact with Roeper teachers, parents and students, come from Olympus College, a Dutch middle and upper school. Four years ago, the school formed Opus, a program for gifted students that was based upon the writings and teachings of Annemarie Roeper, founder of The Roeper School. Currently, the Dutch school offers the Opus gifted learning program for grades six, seven, eight and nine and each year continues to add an additional grade level to its program.
During their time in southeastern Michigan, the educators enjoyed taking part in various extracurricular activities offered by Roeper, hosted a discussion with Roeper parents about international perspectives on gifted education and enjoyed various outings at local landmarks such as Greenfield Village, the Motown Museum and the Detroit RiverWalk.
This partnership between the schools, started three years ago when the Dutch teachers first came to visit The Roeper School, has continued to flourish and grow. In addition to their visit, the Dutch teachers converse throughout the year with their Roeper counterparts to learn and educate each other on various challenges.
“This is a great experience for our teachers and students and provides the school with a window to the world outside our walls,” said Dunn. “We are proud that our educational philosophy has been influential in shaping this school in the Netherlands and look forward to continuing and expanding our relationship with our Dutch friends.”
