FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., October 9, 2013 – Farmington Hills-based Fabian, Sklar & King, P.C., announced today that they have donated 500 10-year sealed lithium battery operated smoke alarms to the Detroit Fire Department (DFD) for the fourth consecutive year in honor of Fire Prevention Week, which is currently underway and goes until Oct. 12. Stuart Sklar, shareholder of Fabian, Sklar & King, made the announcement.
The formal announcement of the donation took place on Oct. 9 at the Detroit Fire Department’s Engine 27. Members of the DFD will be distributing Fabian Sklar & King’s generous donation to members of the Detroit community and installing them in homes free of charge. Inspired by Fabian, Sklar & King’s noted generosity and yearly commitment to this initiative, Kidde, the Mebane, N.C.-based manufacturer of the alarms, committed to donating an additional 100 alarms—bringing the total number of units donated to the DFD this year to 600. Thanks to Fabian, Sklar & King’s donations since 2009 through this initiative, thousands of Detroit residents have been able to obtain these life-saving tools and have them installed in their homes by a firefighter at no cost.
“The Detroit Fire Department is a world-class organization comprised of some of the bravest men and women in the world,” said Sklar. “We are proud to partner with them once again for this life-changing initiative and help get the word out to Detroit-area residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms present in their homes.”
A committed member of the local community, last year, the firm was actively involved in helping 15 DFD arson investigators become Certified Fire and Explosion Investigators (CFEI) through the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI). Notably, Fabian, Sklar & King initiated and organized a three day, 20 hour training program whereby 15 DFD Arson Section investigators received training from leading fire investigation professionals and educators from around the country. Following the training, the investigators took and passed the CFEI exam, resulting in the most CFEI’s in the history of the fire department. Fabian, Sklar & King covered all expenses associated with the training, which would have cost the DFD over $20,000 to provide.
“Thanks to Fabian, Sklar & King’s generous donations over the past four years, we have been able to distribute more than 2,000 of these life-saving devices to Detroit-area residents,” said Detroit Fire Department Fire Chief Craig Dougherty. “Smoke alarms won’t prevent fires from happening, but they will alert individuals and families to fires and help ensure they are able to get to safety quickly, and we encourage residents to contact us to have alarms installed in their homes.”
For more than 25 years, the lawyers at Fabian, Sklar & King have been dedicated to advocating and protecting the rights of those injured or killed as a result of fires or explosions. The firm has successfully handled thousands of property damage claims ranging from propane and natural gas explosions, to multimillion-dollar commercial fire claims for Fortune 500 companies.
Both Sklar and Michael Fabian, founding shareholder of the firm, were recently selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2014, the 20th edition of the prestigious list honoring America’s best attorneys.
