Shopping in Michigan builds consumer rewards for local stores, entertainment and charity
LATHRUP VILLAGE, Mich. – June 4, 2012 – Who says a credit card can’t build community? Michigan First Credit Unionhas created a new credit card to reward consumers to buy local and support Michigan. Individuals that use the Experience Michigan First Rewards Visa® earn bonus points for local purchases and build up rewards points toward statewide and national travel, shopping and attractions or to make donations to local charities. Michigan First President/CEO Michael Poulos made the announcement.

“Our state is making a comeback because of the local institutions and local leaders we’re partnering with as part of Experience Michigan First. Now users can continue to buy local and be rewarded for it,” says Poulos. “When we sat down to create a rewards credit card, we knew we wanted to encourage supporting Michigan. We love this state and know consumers want to show off their passion in everything they do.”
The card also shows state pride, as users can choose from 12 unique photographs that capture the best of Michigan—showcasing the excitement of Greektown and the Detroit skyline to the majesty of the Mackinac Bridge and Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Rewards to choose from include gift cards to:
- Michigan attractions and entertainment like the Detroit Zoo, Emagine Theaters, The Henry Ford, Michigan’s Adventure and Cheyne Park Amphitheatre;
- Travel and shopping destinations such as the Grand Hotel, the Bavarian Inn, Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, Great Lakes Crossing, Twelve Oaks and The M Den;
- Local restaurants including Andiamo, Buddy’s Pizza, Cliff Bells and Muer Seafood Restaurants; and
- Downloads such as deals from Groupon, purchases through QuickGifts and music from Puretracks.
Cardholders can also donate their rewards points toward 20 different local charities including Alternative for Girls, CARE of Southeastern Michigan, Detroit City Year, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Urban League, Focus Hope, Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan, Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County, the Museum of African American History, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southeastern Michigan, the United Negro College Fund and the Southfield Community Foundation.
The Experience Michigan First card has no annual fee, no balance transfer fee and a low rate. The rewards program adds one point for every dollar and 1.5 points for spending in Michigan. More details are available at www.ExperienceMichiganFirst.com.
