Detroit Country Day School Teacher Named 2014 Science Teacher of Promise

Nicole Jakubowski honored by the Board of the Michigan Science Teachers Association
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., April 7, 2014 – The Board of the Michigan Science Teachers Association (MSTA) has named Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) teacher Nicole Jakubowski as the 2014 Science Teacher of Promise. DCDS Headmaster Glen Shilling made the announcement.
Jakubowski was recognized at the MSTA conference held in Lansing, Mich. in March. She was selected for demonstrating innovative teaching strategies, inspiring her students and serving as an excellent role model for students and teachers.
A third through fifth grade science and math teacher at the DCDS Junior School, Jakubowski fosters a hands-on learning environment that provokes discovery and student growth. The DCDS Junior School science curriculum teaches life, physical and earth science concepts and features special programs including in classroom visits from scientists and trips to Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. In addition, Jakubowski also actively serves as a committee member for the Oakland County Science Olympiad.
“Nicole’s leadership and passion for teaching transforms students’ attitudes about science, which also positively impacts other subjects as they apply the science concepts learned in her class to other disciplines,” said Marlenn Maicki, Junior School dean and Science Department chair. “She is very deserving of this award, and we are proud to have her as a member of the DCDS Junior School faculty.”
