Detroit Country Day School Students Earn Top Awards at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich., May 19, 2011 — Detroit Country Day School is pleased to announce that two Upper School students, junior Cheng Dai and senior Allen Yuan, received top awards May 13 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles.
Dai’s project, The Role of Drosophila Glial Cells in Circadian Regulation of Locomotor Activity, won First Place for Animal Science from the American Psychological Society, the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Prize and the Second Place Intel Grand Award in Animal Science.
Yuan’s project, Linearly Many Faults in (n,k)-star Graphs, won the Army First Place in Mathematics, the Air Force First Place in Mathematics, United Technologies First Place in Mathematics, MIT Lincoln Laboratory Prize and the Intel Grand Award First Place in Mathematics.
More than 1,500 high school students selected from 443 affiliate fairs in 65 countries, regions and territories come together at the world’s largest science research competition to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge research and inventions, and compete for more than $4 million in awards. Each award comes with a monetary prize, which can be used by the students to continue their research and education. Dai and Yuan earned a combined total of $14,000. Both took top prizes at previous state-level science competitions to qualify for this final event.
