Detroit Country Day Middle School Students Earn Top Writing Awards

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich., July 24, 2012 — Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) is pleased to announce seven middle school students have been recognized for outstanding achievement in writing. Detroit Country Day School Headmaster Glen Shilling made the announcement.

Top honors from the Scholastic Writing Awards program were given to eighth grader Claire Wang, who won a National Silver Medal for Poetry, and seventh grader Jiwon Yun, who received two National Gold Medals for Poetry and Memoir. Additionally, Yun’s award-winning work has been published in SPARK 2012, the Scholastic Writing Awards’ annual anthology of work by the most creative and original middle school students in the nation.

Other Scholastic Writing Awards received include, regional Gold Key Awards for poetry by eighth graders Cameron Barr, Simran Barr, Maggie Chen, Claire Wang and Lydia Wang, while eighth grader Tiffany Christener earned a Silver Key Award in Poetry. Jiwon Yun also earned two regional Gold Key Awards in Poetry and a regional Gold Key Award in Memoir.

Lydia Wang also received the Promising Young Writer Award, established by the National Council of Teachers of English to stimulate and recognize students’ writing talents and to emphasize the importance of writing skills among eighth-grade students.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program is the largest and longest-running recognition program for creative young people in the U.S. The program was created to nurture artistic talent among students in grades 7 through 12 by recognizing and rewarding their achievements in the visual and literary arts. This year, the Scholastic Awards received more than 200,000 submissions of art and writing with only 238 awards granted to middle school students.

The National Council of Teachers of English Young Writers program received 276 submissions and, of those, only 85 students received recognition as Promising Young Writers.
