New leadership to guide electronics recycler through planned growth
MT. PLEASANT, Mich., August 4, 2014—Mt. Pleasant, Mich.-based 3S International, an electronics processor that provides safe, secure, and sustainable e-recycling solutions, announced today that John Van Fossen has been named the company’s new President and COO. Sidney Smith, chairman of the board for 3S International, made the announcement.
As president and COO, Van Fossen will be responsible for overseeing the management and day-to-day operations of 3S International, along with driving the company’s growth and expansion strategy. With one facility already open and operational in Tinley Park, IL., 3S is actively seeking a second Midwest location. The company plans to open six to ten facilities in the next three years.
Van Fossen comes from a role as the director of Government Affairs at Barnes and Thornburg, where he represented 3S International as a client and helped guide the organization through the start-up process. Van Fossen’s background also includes serving as the director of Government Affairs for Clark Hill PLC, serving local governments in several regions throughout Michigan, and a role as chief of staff for Congressman Peter Hoekstra. He holds a Master’s of Public Administration degree from Western Michigan University.
“From its inception, John has played a critical role in the evolution of 3S International, and his depth of experience, leadership and vision makes him an excellent fit for the role of president and COO,” Smith said. “John’s knowledge of the regulatory environment, economic development planning, and history of working in local government will be of tremendous value as we continue to grow our electronics recycling operation across the region and country.”
3S specializes in recycling hazardous LCD and mercury-containing products on a large scale – while addressing previously unsolvable e-recycling issues. The company has exclusive North American rights to the proprietary BLUBOX technology, which can reduce end-of-life electronics into recyclable fragments and safely extract the rare earth elements – at a rate of 2,200 pounds an hour and 15 million pounds of electronics each year.
